How to Not Get Stuck in the Process of Healing

Why do some people move from session to session, yet never seem to move forward on their healing journey? It's a great question, and one worth sitting with.

You'll often hear this from those in traditional counseling, but I've seen it just as often within alternative healing modalities. As a quantum healing practitioner, I've observed it in clients — and I've lived it myself, especially while working through some of my own deeply seeded beliefs.

Anyone who has begun the work of facing painful experiences, events, or situations will tell you: it's hard. I agree completely. Willingly placing ourselves in an uncomfortable position takes will, purpose, and courage. It also asks for a certain amount of faith — faith that the discomfort will ease our suffering and lead us toward a better experience of life.

It's worth knowing that not all healing modalities are equally effective, for a few reasons. First, the modality that will serve you best in this moment depends entirely on what you're experiencing and where you are on your path. For example: someone who has done significant healing work on balancing the mental and energetic aspects from prolonged abuse but is still drawn to the same relationship dynamics, may benefit from somatic release work paired with a deeper look at the emotional body rather than revisiting a counselling or reiki session alone. (Again, this is only a hypothetical example.)

Honestly, I've found it rare — though not impossible — to experience full release of longstanding trauma from a single session. When it does happen, the person is usually already further along in their process than they realize. In my sessions, it's common for the higher self, or subconscious self, to offer clear direction: awareness, new habits and actions that support a new belief, a new way of Being, a new perspective on both the situation or question we addressed and what lies beyond it.

These underlying patterns are what keep pain and suffering alive — imprinted on our energetic signature and nervous system at the origin point, and from there, manifesting outward through every layer of our mental, emotional, physical, and energetic bodies.

Why We Get Stuck in the Healing Process

Another common reason people stall is that we rush the process — we don't fully move through it. So, what does "the process of healing" actually mean? It isn't linear, not a straight line from A to B, but there are key components worth understanding.

1. Identifying the origin point. Not always necessary in every case, but often important — especially when there's an unconscious pattern or deeply held belief still running the subconscious mind.

2. Allowing yourself to feel and consciously release emotion. Some people wear their trauma on their sleeve, constantly caught in it, letting it visibly shape their mood and day — but this outpouring is unregulated, and it often feels like it's controlling them rather than the other way around. Others avoid and mask their trauma so completely they can't feel anything at all — sometimes intentionally, sometimes because the suppression itself became woven into the trauma, and eventually, into their personality.

3. Understanding your patterns, beliefs, behaviours, and habits — your own, and sometimes those of whoever caused harm, depending on the situation. Exploring family dynamics, the roles we were assigned, and the deeper implications of lineage and epigenetics can offer real clarity here.

4. Acceptance. Do we fully accept what is? Do we accept people as they are? Do we accept every part of ourselves? Can we surrender our grip on how things "should" turn out? This step is essential — it's what allows us to detach from the self-image we've built, and from the beliefs formed by what we've lived through. Only then does space open for something new.

5. Somatic release. Have we truly experienced every form of shifting available to us — moving what's stored in the body – the nervous system, not just the mind?

6. Integration. This is the piece I find most misunderstood, and most often skipped — especially among people who've been on their journey a long time and still feel stuck. You'll notice many modalities now offer dedicated "integration" support, and there's a reason for that. To me, integration is best understood as expanded awareness: when our perception genuinely shifts, and whatever we were healing no longer affects our present Being or our experience, that piece becomes whole with the rest of us — no longer a fractured part working against the whole. Integration is what allows the first new neural pathways to form, laying the groundwork for the new thoughts, beliefs, emotions, behaviours, and habits that carry us into a new way of Being, perceiving, and understanding — both the situation addressed, and everything that lies beyond it.

As I mentioned, none of this unfolds in a straight line. These pieces are interchangeable, and you'll likely revisit them as you move into deeper layers of healing.

It's also worth noting: we are not all the same in how we perceive, feel, or experience life. What's deeply traumatic to one person may barely register for another — you can see this clearly between siblings who grew up in the same difficult home. Comparing our journey to another’s doesn’t serve us in any way.

Traps to Watch For

A few patterns tend to keep people stuck in the healing process instead of moving forward:

  • Constant misery — treating suffering as identity, so that healing would mean losing a sense of self

  • Cycling through negative emotion with no relief — feeling, and feeling, without ever consciously releasing

  • Bypassing — skipping straight to acceptance or forgiveness without ever fully feeling what came before

  • Over-analysis — staying in the mind, endlessly understanding the "why," while the body and emotions never get their turn to release

  • Avoiding integration — doing the deep work, then never giving it room to settle into a new way of Being

Healing Is Cyclical

Just as life itself moves in cycles — the calendar, the seasons, the cosmos, the cycle of life itself — so does healing. We will be given opportunities, again and again, to show how far we've come as similar circumstances return in new forms. Through conscious choice, each time, we can meet them differently — building new ways of Being that support the life we actually want to experience, from the happiest and most empowered version of ourselves.

If there's one thing I want you to take from this: the healing journey was never meant to be a never-ending loop of pain. It's meant to be balanced — moments of deep, honest work held alongside rest, self-compassion, and steps toward rediscovery of what brings us joy.

Healing isn't an endless mountain you force your way up. It's a rhythm you learn to move with, one that asks as much softness from you as it does courage.
