When Your Nervous System Normalizes Stress: A Message for Highly Sensitive and Awakening Souls

Humans are one of the most adaptable species on this Earth. We were designed that way, built for survival above all else. It's an obvious strength — our ability to grow and shift as life calls for it. But what happens when that same adaptability becomes a disadvantage?

When Your Nervous System Normalizes Stress

When we move through a prolonged period of stress, we adapt. Our nervous system, initially triggered into alarm, slowly begins to register that stress as neutral — just background noise. This is what it looks like when your nervous system normalizes stress: we come to accept it as a typical part of life, even as it continues to quietly work against us.

But the truth is, our nervous system is still being triggered, every time. Our tolerance rises, yes — but the body keeps score. That stress leaves a silent mark on our system, quietly setting into motion a slow deterioration of the immune system and other physical parts of us. The mind may consciously accept this state-of-being, even while the subconscious longs for something different. The heart yearns. Our connection to spirit feels distant, or lost altogether.

We were never built to endure a constant, steady state of stress — not since we evolved beyond our most primal, survival-driven existence when life expectancy was around 30-35 years old.

What Happens When We Choose Something Different

So, what happens when we finally choose a different path?

At first, our subconscious will be inclined to pull us back toward the familiar. That old stress is imprinted on the nervous system, accepted by the conscious mind, and expectation, habit and ways of being have grown dependent on the beliefs that formed around them. Change, even wanted change, meets resistance — not because we're doing it wrong, but because our whole system must relearn what "normal" feels like.

On a spiritual level, we often enter these experiences — these relationships, jobs, spaces, states-of-being — as a kind of contract, undertaken for the sake of soul growth (and oftentimes under false pretences but that’s another post). Once the lesson is learned, or the growth achieved, we tend to move on in one way or another.

There's good news here: we can use that same innate ability to grow and shift, and consciously move into a new state-of-being and experience through awareness, accountability, and choice. Choosing how to precede is the key here.

Give Yourself Grace

If you find yourself in the middle of change right now — whether it was planned or without notice — remember to give yourself grace, and time, to adapt.

Give yourself permission to simply BE.

Being adaptable doesn't mean we're spared discomfort, or that we won't mourn what once was — even the parts of us that already knew it wasn't serving us. When change comes on our own timing, it tends to move through us more easily. When it's sudden, or unwelcome, it asks more of us.

So if you're in the middle of it right now, here's a place to start:

  • Name what's actually shifting. Not just the event, but what it's asking your nervous system, your heart, and your spirit to release.

  • Check in with your body daily, even briefly. Notice where you're holding tension, and simply breathe into it rather than pushing it away.

  • Ground your energy. One of the easiest ways to regulate your system — whether through earthing (making contact with the earth with bare skin), tree hugging, swimming in natural water sources, or through intention, meditation, or whatever grounding practice resonates with you.

  • Let mourning and moving forward coexist. You don't need to finish grieving before you're allowed to grow. Both can be true in the same season.

  • Choose one small, steady practice — a walk, a journal entry, a few minutes of stillness — and return to it daily. Consistency, more than intensity, is what helps the nervous system learn a new "normal."

The adaptability that carried you through the stress is the very same gift that will carry you out the other side of it.

Trust that your system, however slowly, is always working to bring you back into alignment. Let yourself take the time that it requires — there's no timeline to rush, only the one that's truly yours.
